Learn at the wheel

Small classes, real clay, no shortcuts.

We keep classes at four students so you get real time on the wheel. Bring an apron; we’ll provide the clay, tools, and the kiln.

Who teaches

Three potters, one kiln.

Each of our instructors has been making and teaching for at least a decade. They all still throw every day.

Naomi Okafor

Studio director · wheel

Naomi trained at the Royal College of Art and has been throwing for 18 years. She founded Kiln & Clay in 2018 and teaches the beginner and intermediate courses.

Daniel Whitfield

Hand-building · open studio

Daniel came to pottery from furniture-making and treats clay like a structural material. He teaches the hand-building and one-day workshops.

Yuna Park

Glaze chemistry

Yuna spent six years as a glaze chemist at a tile factory in Korea before joining the studio. She runs the glaze lab and supervises kiln loads.

Common questions

Before you book.

I’ve never touched clay. Is the beginner class really for me?

Yes. About 80% of our beginner students have never thrown before week one. The first three weeks are entirely about centering and pulling walls — by week six you’ll have a set of pieces you actually want to use.

What should I bring?

Just an apron and clothes you don’t mind getting clay on. We provide clay, tools, towels, and tea. Fingernails should be short — long nails make centering much harder.

What if I miss a class?

You can sit in on any other weekly session in the same term as a make-up, as long as there’s a seat free. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes after the first week.

When do I get my pieces back?

Bisque firing happens every Monday, glaze firing every Thursday. Pieces from the last class of a term are usually ready for pickup the following Saturday. We’ll email you when they’re out of the kiln.

Can I just come and use the studio without taking a class?

Not for your first visit — we require at least one six-week course before you can apply for studio membership. After that, the membership is $180/month and includes 10 lbs of clay, glaze, and unlimited firings.
