Hand-thrown stoneware, made slowly.

A four-seat pottery studio on the edge of Greenpoint. We fire the kiln twice a week and teach wheel-throwing and hand-building classes year-round.

The studio

A small studio with a slow kiln.

Kiln & Clay started in a converted bakery on Clay Street. We make wheel-thrown stoneware in limited runs of 6–24 pieces, host weekly classes for every level, and rent bench time to members who’d rather work on their own.

How it’s made

Three steps, one kiln, six weeks.

Every piece moves through the same slow arc — from a wet lump of clay to a finished, dishwasher-safe object on your table.

01 · Wedge & center

Wedge & center

We knead the clay to push out air pockets, then slam it onto the wheel head to find true center. No centering, no symmetry.

02 · Throw & shape

Throw & shape

Open the form, pull the walls, refine the rim. Each piece takes 8–12 minutes from ball to bone-dry greenware.

03 · Glaze & fire

Glaze & fire

Bisque at 980°C, glaze at 1240°C. The kiln runs twice a week — every piece gets two full firings before it leaves the studio.

From regulars

Notes from the studio.

I came in for a one-off class and stayed for two years. My apartment is now 80% Kiln & Clay.

The mugs are the only ones that survive my dishwasher, my kids, and a six-floor walk-up.
